VET - Course in Epilepsy Management (11106NAT) - 1

Overview  

Course in Epilepsy Management (11106NAT) - 1 is one of three nationally accredited online options which are delivered in partnership with Red Cross First Aid & Mental Health, as EAA’s authorised provider. 

Graduates of these online units will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued by Red Cross First Aid & Mental Health (RTOID: 3605). 

Who is this course for?  

This course is primarily for health care professionals and community support workers wanting more in-depth knowledge about epilepsy. It is relevant for anyone who supports an adult living with intellectual disability and epilepsy and is required to administer emergency medication for the management of seizures. 

Is anything required before I start?  

The Course in Epilepsy Management requires evidence of students having completed one of the following related units prior to enrolment and showing this in the form of a current, valid certificate. 

• HLTAID009 (Supersedes HLTAID001) Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation 

• HLTAID010 (Supersedes HLTAID002) Provide basic emergency life support 

• HLTAID011 (Supersedes HLTAID003) Provide First aid 

Please note participants will require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to complete the training. USI is a Government issued student identifier which is mandatory for certificate issue. If you do not have a USI, please click here to check your eligibility and create one. 

What’s covered? 

This course in Epilepsy Management includes a core unit and two elective units. 

Core unit: Support individuals with epilepsy (NAT11106001) 

This unit covers the ability to understand, recognise and respond to seizures. Topics covered include the anatomy of the brain; epilepsy and seizure types; diagnosing and treating epilepsy; the impact epilepsy has on the person; safety measures for seizures, and lifestyle and seizure first aid. It also promotes an awareness of the impact of epilepsy on a person’s life physically, socially and emotionally. 

Elective unit: Respond to seizures in adults with intellectual disabilities (NAT11106003)  

This unit covers the ability to identify seizures, recognise and appropriately manage situations in which seizure activity may be present in people with an intellectual disability.  It also includes safety and risk management, quality of life issues and the application of a person-centred approach to managing seizures.

Elective unit: Administer emergency medications for seizures (NAT11106002) 

This unit is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to administer prescribed medication to an individual experiencing seizure emergency. The unit covers seizure emergencies, emergency medication, administering emergency medication and contingency management.
